What is QuickBooks Error 1406?

QuickBooks Error 1406 appears when users of the accounting program try to update QuickBooks. The error is a result of some conflicting program or some technical error in the Windows Registry.

 

What leads to QuickBooks Error 1406?

        Conflicting third-party programs in the background may be the root of Error 1406.

        The site may be undergoing back-end maintenance.

        A firewall or security program may be causing this technical interruption.

        QuickBooks files got corrupted or deleted by the user.

        Windows registry keys might be damaged.

        Poor internet connection.

 

Procedure to fix QuickBooks Error 1406

Solution 1: Fixing issues within the Registry

           Open the Run Window [press the Win + R keys].

           Now, go to the Registry Editor Window by typing "Regedit" in the Run window, followed by hitting on Ok.

           Go to “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\iaSTOR” registry key.

           Verify that each key is assigned to the Administrator group.

 

Solution 2: Disable the antivirus software

           Right-click the antivirus icon and disable the antivirus protection.

           Restart the PC.

           Then, run QuickBooks and update the accounting program.

 

 Solution 3: Clean Install QuickBooks

           Press (Win + R) keys to open the Run window.

           Type in "MSconfig".

           Then, hit on "Ok."

           Go to the General tab.

           Now, choose Selective Startup and Load Startup Services option.

           Go to Services.

           Opt to Hide all Microsoft Services.

           Choose Windows Installer in the list of services.

           Now, click on Restart in the System Configuration Window.

           Now, restart the computer and access the Safe mode with Networking.

           Now, download and install QuickBooks Clean install Tool and use it to uninstall QuickBooks.

           When the process is done, proceed to "MSconfig" from the Run window and revert back to the Normal mode.

 

Solution 4: Employ the QuickBooks Install Diagnostic Tool

           Go to the Intuit website and download QuickBooks Tool hub.

           Install the tool hub and run the tool straightaway.

           Within the tool, go to Install Diagnostic Tool in Installation problems tab.


           When the tool completes the scan, run QuickBooks.

           Now, go to the Help tab.

           Click on update QuickBooks Desktop.

           Error 1406 should no longer exist.

                                       

Solution 5: Equip your system with the latest Windows Updates

           Go to Windows Update feature from the Start menu.

           Click on Check for updates.

           Opt for all the updates and download them.

           Restart the PC.

           Let the updates get installed.

           When desktop shows up, run QuickBooks and try updating QuickBooks again.

 

Solution 6: Restore Windows

           Go to the Start menu and access Programs.

           Move on to System Tools.

           Click on System Restore.


           Hit on Next.

           Select a restore point and hit Next.

           Again hit on Next.

           Restart the PC.

           Run QuickBooks Desktop and update the accounting program.

 

Solution 7: Turn on permissions for data.dat

           Press (Win + E) open Win Explorer.

           Click on Organize.

           Move to Folder and Search option.

           Click on View.

           Opt for Show hidden files and folders.

           Pick "Hide Protected OS File".

           Now, hit on "Ok."

           Go to "C: /users/all/users/Microsoft/Office/data".

           Right-click on data.dat and click on Properties.

           Click on Security.

           Go to the Advanced tab.

           Click on the Permissions tab.

           Click on the list and hit on the Edit button.

           Opt for the Full control option.

           Finally, click on Ok.
